About this position

Fundació Hospital Universitari Vall d'Hebron - Institut de Recerca (VHIR) in Barcelona, Spain is recruiting a Predoctoral Researcher for the Translational Molecular Pathology Research Group / Translational Molecular Pathology Laboratory.

The project is a PhD position within the Intercellular Communication Research Line and focuses on cancer biology, molecular pathology, mitochondrial transfer, tumour-stromal interactions, cell-cell communication, and chemotherapy resistance. The successful candidate will study how cancer cells communicate with stromal cells under therapeutic stress, with emphasis on the role of Connexin 43 (Cx43) and intercellular mitochondrial exchange. Methods include quantitative mitochondrial-tracing, HiBiT-based platforms, live-cell imaging, CRISPR-engineered cancer models, tumour–stromal co-culture systems, fluorescence/confocal imaging, and mechanistic analysis of stress adaptation and metabolic response.

Eligibility highlights: Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences, Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology or a related life/health science field; an official Master’s degree that provides access to a PhD programme; minimum average grade of 8.5/10 in both degrees; strong written and spoken English. Prior research experience in molecular biology, cell biology, or cancer biology is required. Experience with mammalian cell culture, microscopy, flow cytometry, image analysis, CRISPR/Cas9, mitochondrial biology, extracellular vesicles, or therapy-resistance models is desirable. Spanish and/or Catalan and publication record are advantageous.

Funding and contract: 4-year predoctoral contract under the Amics del VHIR PhD Call 2026 fellowship (EPIF), full-time (37.5 hours/week), temporary contract, with salary according to the call conditions.

Application window: Deadline is 24 September 2026 at 23:59 (Europe/Andorra). Starting date is expected between November and December 2026, with incorporation up to March 2027 for non-EU candidates.

How to apply: Use the VHIR application portal linked in the posting and submit before the deadline. Shortlisting is based on CV, followed by interviews and, depending on the role, a practical assessment.
