About this position
TU Delft is advertising a PhD position in Two-Phase Flow of Cryogenic Hydrogen within the Propulsion & Power group at the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering. The project investigates how cryogenic hydrogen evaporates and forms a two-phase mixture during distribution from storage to engine systems, with direct relevance to sustainable aviation and hydrogen propulsion.
The research is primarily experimental and includes commissioning a new cryogenic test facility, running advanced experiments on cryogenic two-phase flow, and developing cryogenic sensors for heat and flow measurements in collaboration with the Von Karman Institute (Belgium). The position sits in an international, collaborative environment with expertise in thermodynamics, heat transfer, and turbomachinery.
Eligibility highlights: an MSc in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related field; strong foundations in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer; hands-on experimental aptitude; and very good spoken and written English. Experience with two-phase flow and heat transfer experiments and/or modelling is highly valued.
Funding and employment: this is a paid doctoral employment position for 4 years in principle, with an initial 1.5-year contract and a follow-up 2.5-year contract subject to a go/no-go assessment. Salary ranges from €3059 to €3881 gross per month, plus holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus. TU Delft also mentions health insurance discounts and a monthly work costs contribution.
How to apply: submit your application online via the TU Delft application button by 10 August 2026. Upload a CV, a one-page motivational letter, and copies of your BSc and MSc degrees and transcripts. Email applications are not accepted.
