About this position
RWTH Aachen University is offering a PhD position in the Department of Biohybrid & Medical Textiles (BioTex), within the Institute of Applied Medical Engineering (AME). The project, ElastiCation, focuses on understanding how the molecular design and functionalisation of elastin-based biomaterials influence their susceptibility to calcification. The work is situated at the interface of biomaterials, tissue engineering, and cardiovascular research.
The successful candidate will join the Biomaterials group and contribute to the development of elastin-based cardiovascular implants, including elastin-like recombinamers (ELRs). These recombinant proteins can be tailored at the amino-acid level and functionalised with bioactive motifs, making them promising candidates for next-generation implants because of their mechanical properties and biological compatibility. A key goal of the project is to better understand and control calcification processes in these materials, supporting future translational work in cardiovascular biomaterials.
The position offers an interdisciplinary research environment combining engineering, materials science, and biomedical research. The project provides access to methods in biomaterial characterisation, cell culture, imaging, and cardiovascular testing. It also offers opportunities for scientific collaboration and participation in international conferences.
This is a PhD opening at RWTH Aachen University in Germany, with a starting date in January 2027. The application deadline is 6 November 2026 at 23:59 (Europe/Berlin).
Applicants are expected to hold a master’s degree or equivalent in biochemistry, biomedical engineering, biotechnology, biology, biomaterials, materials science, or a related life science discipline. The posting also seeks candidates with a strong interest in biomaterials and experimental biomedical research, experience with cell culture and/or biomaterial characterisation, a structured and reliable working style, enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research and experimental problem solving, and excellent written and spoken English. Experience with vascular cell culture, biomineralisation, molecular biology, histology, microscopy, or related biomaterial methods is considered an advantage.
Applications should be sent by email to the contact address provided in the posting. The application form listed in the announcement should also be checked as part of the submission process.
