About this position

The Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) invites applications for a fully funded PhD position focused on the investigation of tribological behaviour of cellular joint implants in multi-axial movement. This research is part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Network CUSTOM project, which unites design, manufacturing, and testing disciplines to develop next-generation patient-specific shoulder implants. The project addresses the increasing demand for shoulder replacements and aims to reduce implant failure rates by optimizing materials and testing methodologies.

The PhD research will explore wear mechanisms between metal and polymer joint surfaces, including both solid and 3D printed cellular surfaces, under uni- and multiaxial movement. The study will involve literature surveys, test planning, sample preparation, device modification, and comprehensive wear testing. The candidate will evaluate results to establish correlations and define key wear mechanisms, contributing to the development of more durable and functional implant surfaces.

As part of the doctoral project, the candidate will undertake two three-month research stays: one at Semmelweis University in Hungary to gain clinical knowledge on artificial joint wear debris, and another at the University of Birmingham to perform comparative wear tests. The position offers extensive training and networking opportunities within the MSCA CUSTOM network, which includes 17 doctoral candidates across Europe.

The ideal candidate should have a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a closely related field, preferably with distinction. Experience with mechanical testing, polymers, tribology, and materials characterization techniques is required, with specific experience in UHMWPE wear considered advantageous. Excellent English communication skills are mandatory (TOEFL ≥ 94 or IELTS ≥ 7). Applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Hungary for more than 12 months in the 36 months prior to recruitment and must not have previously obtained a PhD.

The position is fully funded, offering a living allowance of 2721.83 EUR/month, a mobility allowance of 710 EUR/month (tax-free), and a family allowance of 660 EUR/month (tax-free) if applicable. Salary and allowances are paid in HUF according to Hungarian law. The successful candidate will benefit from a vibrant academic environment in Budapest, participate in international conferences, and contribute to education at Bachelor or Master level.

To apply, send your application and inquiries to Dr. Gábor Szebényi at [email protected], including relevant documents and mentioning the position title. For further information, visit the department website or contact the supervisor directly.

BME is a leading Hungarian institution for technology, renowned for its commitment to innovation, research, and development, with a strong international reputation and a diverse student body.
