About this position

This PhD position offers an exciting opportunity to investigate the fundamental aspects of the immune system in chickens, focusing on how egg incubation conditions affect immune development and infection resistance. The project, 'I-COMP: Improved immune competence of day-old chicks: a head start,' is a collaborative effort between Wageningen University & Research (WUR), Utrecht University's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, and industrial partners HatchTech and Merck Animal Health. Funded by the NWO Open Technology Programme, the research aims to create and test a system for evaluating the impact of incubation on immune system development during the late embryonic stage, with the goal of improving chick health and resistance to infections.

You will join the Jansen group within the Cell Biology & Immunology chair group, where research centers on understanding immune cell activation and function in veterinary species, particularly chickens. The group develops assays and reagents to perform fundamental research on immune system development in young chickens, applying this knowledge to design strategies for enhancing immune protection and reducing infections. Supervised directly by Dr. Christine Jansen, you will work closely with other PhD students and a technician in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment with opportunities for both local and international collaboration.

The position is fully funded, offering a supportive research environment and access to cutting-edge facilities.
