PhD position on the role and effectiveness of AI in foreign language education KU Leuven in Belgium

A PhD position is available at KU Leuven within the research group Language, Education & Society, part of the Linguistics Research Unit. The project focuses on the role and effectiveness of artificial intelligence (AI) in foreign language education, with a particular emphasis on how AI can support the development of French speaking and writing skills in secondary education.

The project addresses an important gap in current research: although AI is increasingly used to support productive language learning, empirical evidence on its effectiveness in foreign language education remains limited. This PhD project will investigate AI-driven differentiated instruction for speaking and writing, aiming to produce scientifically grounded insights into the added value of AI for personalized learning and the integration of technology into foreign language education. The work is intended to inform both educational practice and policy in digitally supported language learning.

KU Leuven offers a stimulating research environment where the selected candidate can collaborate with fellow PhD researchers and experienced scholars in the research unit. The appointment is offered under PhD scholarship (bursary) status, initially for one year and extendable for a second year after positive evaluation. Further funding opportunities will be explored jointly.

The ideal candidate has a Master's degree in Linguistics and Literature, Applied Linguistics, Linguistics, or a related field, preferably with French among the languages of study. Applicants who have not yet completed their degree may still apply if they expect to graduate before 1 October 2026, and all degree requirements must be fulfilled by the date of appointment. An Educational Master’s degree or teacher education programme is considered an asset. Candidates should have a strong academic record, relevant knowledge of language education and language learning, strong communication skills in Dutch, French, and English, and a willingness to further develop their expertise in both quantitative and qualitative research methods.
