About this position

Université Grenoble Alpes and the Néel Institute are offering a fully funded PhD position in spin injection from coherent to quantum magnonics as part of the QuanG2 doctoral programme, supported by Horizon Europe COFUND. The project is based in Grenoble, France, within a strong quantum science ecosystem and in collaboration with the LPE/crystal growth team at the Néel Institute and an international partner at ETH Zurich through the IRP CNRS Cormorant project.

The PhD focuses on the physics of spin-injection phenomena in the context of highly coherent magnon states near their ground state. The research aims to understand spin-magnon interactions in quantized systems, spin-charge conversion mechanisms, and efficiency in a prototypical bilayer system composed of Bi-substituted yttrium iron garnet and Pt. This platform combines a magnetic-insulator magnon host with a heavy-metal spin injector based on the spin Hall effect.

The work is experimental and will involve quasi-static magneto-transport, microwave-domain measurements, and optical probing by Brillouin light scattering. The broader scientific context includes cryogenic circulators and isolators, non-reciprocal microwave signal transmission, magnon dynamics, and new device concepts for cryogenic spin-injection magnonics. By the end of the PhD, the project may lead toward rapidly switching reconfigurable magnonic elements and oscillators based on active magnon amplification.

The position is aimed at candidates with a strong training in Physics and an interest in experiments, materials, and solid-state devices. Useful experience includes coding, advanced instrumentation, transport measurements, microwaves, and nanofabrication. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent by the deadline and must not already hold a doctoral degree. The project also follows the MSCA mobility rule: candidates must not have spent more than 12 months in France during the 36 months before the deadline and must not be current employees of the host laboratory.

The application deadline is 7 September 2026 at 12:00 PM (Paris time). Applications must be submitted via the QuanG2 online application platform. The selection process includes eligibility checking, pre-selection in mid-October 2026, online interviews at the end of October 2026, and in-person interviews in Grenoble in early December 2026. The programme offers a high-level international research environment and dedicated funding for research and training activities.

What's required

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in Physics by the application deadline and must not already hold a doctoral degree. Applicants must comply with the MSCA mobility rule, meaning they must not have resided or carried out their main activity in France for more than 12 months in the 36 months preceding the deadline, and they must not be current employees of the host laboratory. A training in Physics is required, with interest in experiments, materials, and solid-state devices. Familiarity with coding and interest in advanced instrumentation are expected, and experience with transport measurements, microwaves, or nanofabrication will be valuable.

How to apply

Apply through the QuanG2 online application platform using the PhD application form. Submit your application before 7 September 2026 at 12:00 PM Paris time. Eligible candidates will first undergo an eligibility check, then pre-selection and interviews.
