Lancaster University invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in Terahertz Magnetic Recording, supported by the Green Future Fellowship project. This opportunity is aimed at developing green data storage technology by leveraging terahertz magnetic recording, a cutting-edge approach to address the energy and heat challenges faced by modern data centres and cloud-based technologies. The project focuses on creating memory devices with extremely low energy consumption and ultrafast switching times, utilizing terahertz frequency electromagnetic pulses to manipulate quantum magnets ('spins') in magnetic memory. These terahertz photons can selectively excite spins without significant heating, enabling efficient and rapid data storage.

The research is predominantly experimental and sits at the interface of magnetism and photonics. The successful candidate will receive comprehensive training in ultrafast optics, terahertz and magneto-optical spectroscopies, and the physics of magnetically ordered materials. Additional academic development includes preparation of high-impact journal publications, presentation at international conferences, and participation in outreach and engagement activities. There are also opportunities for technology transfer, commercialization, international travel, and collaboration with major industry partners such as Seagate Technology.

This PhD project aims to contribute to solving the global challenge of excessive energy consumption by data-intensive technologies, including Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, and cloud computing. The Green Future Fellowship programme is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion, encouraging applications from all backgrounds. The position is open to UK, EU, and Overseas students, with a fully funded studentship covering four years of study. Applicants must hold a first or upper second class degree in Physics and a Master's degree in Physics before starting the programme.
