PhD Position: Volcanic Ash Hazards and Impacts to Health and Environment in Aotearoa New Zealand Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand

Aotearoa New Zealand is a volcanically active region, featuring a diverse range of volcanoes across the North Island, including the basaltic Auckland Volcanic Field, the rhyolitic super volcano systems of the central Taupō Volcanic Zone, and numerous andesitic cones such as Whakaari / White Island. Recent studies indicate a significant probability (30-50%) of a large volcanic eruption occurring within the next 50 years, with ash-fall expected to be the most widespread and damaging hazard.

This fully funded PhD position at the School of Geography, Environment & Earth Sciences, Victoria University of Wellington, offers the opportunity to contribute to a project investigating the impact of volcanic ash (tephra) on human health and the natural environment. The research will employ geochemical investigation and dispersal modelling to address key questions: the elemental compositional ranges of volcanic ash from active volcanoes, comparisons between historic and fresh ash, and the implications of these geochemical compositions for health and environmental outcomes in future eruptions.

The project is flexible, allowing candidates to tailor their research focus to their interests within the broad scope of volcanic ash hazards. Funding covers tuition fees and stipend for three years, as well as resources for research activities, including travel for conferences and research visits, computing, and publishing support.

Applicants should hold a Master's-level degree in geochemistry, volcanology, geology, earth system science, physical geography, or a closely related field. Experience with quantitative research methods, geochemical laboratory work, and computer programming is advantageous. The anticipated start date is as soon as practicable.
