About this position
The International Max Planck Research School for Biology and Computation (IMPRS-BAC) is recruiting doctoral candidates for a start in 2027. This PhD programme is a collaboration between the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics and Freie Universität Berlin, offering interdisciplinary training at the interface of molecular life sciences and computational sciences.
Students will work in areas spanning molecular biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, mathematics, statistics, algorithms, artificial intelligence, and related fields. The programme highlights research themes such as genome science, epigenetics, developmental biology, gene regulation, RNA biology, protein biochemistry, stem cells, sequence analysis, molecular evolution, and biophysics.
The position is aimed at exceptional graduates from around the world who have an above-average master's or comparable degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, mathematics, bioinformatics, or a related field by September 2027. Applicants should have some experience with computational or biological research, demonstrate strong English language ability, and submit a project proposal that matches the interests of the recruiting faculty.
Funding is provided for three years to support the doctoral project, and successful candidates receive a degree from Freie Universität Berlin. The programme also offers excellent structured supervision through a thesis advisory committee, a diverse international community, scientific and transferable skills training, and support for learning German.
The application deadline is 7 December 2026 at 18:00 CET. Long-listed candidates are invited to online interviews in February 2027, short-listed candidates are invited to Berlin in March 2027, and successful candidates are expected to start between May and November 2027.
Applications must be submitted through the online portal on the programme website. For queries, contact Dr. Anne-Dominique Gindrat at [email protected].
