ETH Zurich is offering two fully funded PhD positions in the fields of Electrochemical Biosensing and Biofluid Sampling Technologies as part of the ENDOTRAIN MSCA Doctoral Network. These positions are co-hosted by the Human-centered Sensing Laboratory (Prof. Andreas Güntner) and the Laboratory of Exercise and Health (Prof. Katrien de Bock), providing a unique interdisciplinary environment at the interface of materials science, biomedical device engineering, and physiological measurements. The research aims to advance digital endocrinology and transform the diagnosis and management of adrenal disorders through innovative sensor and sampling technologies.
The Electrochemical Biosensing project focuses on the design and fabrication of nanotechnology-enhanced electrochemical sensors for highly sensitive and selective biomarker detection. Key research areas include the development of functional electrode coating materials (nano-enzymes), surface architectures for reversible analyte binding, and integration with advanced transduction schemes. Validation will occur in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo, including mouse models and clinical trials, with secondments at Imperial College London and University Hospital Zurich.
The Biofluid Sampling Technologies project centers on developing micromachined platforms for minimally invasive, localized access to biofluids such as interstitial fluid and muscle tissue. The goal is to enable direct, continuous sampling and analysis of metabolites, hormones, and other markers, with applications in sports science, rehabilitation, and muscle-related diseases. The project includes secondments at the University of Bergen and University Hospital Zurich.
Applicants should have a strong background in (Electro-)Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Biomedical Engineering, Physiology, Mechanical Engineering, or related fields. Experience in sensor design, nanoparticle fabrication, microfabrication, and biocompatible materials is advantageous. Candidates must not have resided in Switzerland for more than 12 months in the 36 months prior to recruitment and must be willing to participate in interdisciplinary training across Europe.

What's required
