PhD positions in Ethnology and Social Anthropology Slovak Academy of Sciences in Slovakia

The Institute of Ethnology and Social Anthropology at the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava invites applications for its four-year PhD programme, commencing September 2026. This opportunity is designed for motivated candidates with a strong academic background in Ethnology, Social Anthropology, or related humanities and social sciences. The programme offers a diverse range of research topics, including digital research collections, religion in the public sphere, transformation of Roma identities, sensory and affective ecologies, visual archives, contemporary legends and conspiracy theories, Jewish community memory, and transnational families in Central Europe.

Supervisors for these projects include Andrej Gogora, Juraj Majo, Elena Maruschiakova – Popova, Jaroslava Panáková, Zuzana Panczová, Monika Vrzgulová, and Martina Wilsch, each bringing expertise in their respective fields. The research environment is interdisciplinary, encouraging theoretical and applied innovation, and offers opportunities for empirical fieldwork, archival research, and participatory methods. Projects may focus on digital humanities, knowledge management, archival science, secular activism, generational and life-stage transformations, ethnic and national identity, multispecies relations, visual and sensory anthropology, folklore, and migration studies.

Applicants must possess a Master degree or equivalent and demonstrate proficiency in English for communication with an international scientific audience.
