About this position
GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam, Germany is recruiting four Doctoral Researchers (PhD) for the Geospex (Geo-Spectral Exploration) project on spectral remote sensing for critical raw material exploration.
The project sits at the interface of geology, remote sensing, geochemistry, and artificial intelligence. Research will combine satellite, UAV, field, and laboratory imaging spectroscopy across VNIR, SWIR, and LWIR ranges, together with mineralogical and geochemical analyses, to improve exploration of ore systems and critical raw materials.
Study sites include world-class deposits in Australia, Chile, Canada, Namibia, and Brazil, with each PhD researcher taking primary responsibility for data acquisition and field campaigns at one site while contributing to shared data processing, interpretation, and publication efforts.
Applicants should hold an MSc in Earth Sciences, Remote Sensing, Computer Science, or a closely related field. The post is especially suitable for candidates with experience or strong interest in economic geology, field geology, spectroscopy and hyperspectral analysis, geochemistry/mineralogy, and Python/AI-based data analysis. Excellent English and willingness to do international fieldwork are required; UAV experience, German/Spanish/Portuguese, and a driving licence are desirable.
The positions are funded through a five-year BMFTR-supported project and offered as 36-month fixed-term appointments at salary group 13 (TVöD Bund), part-time 75%.
Workplace: Potsdam, Germany. Application deadline: 31 August 2026. Apply online only and include a CV with two referees, motivation letter, degree certificates/transcripts, and English proof if applicable.
