About this position
The Regensburg Center for Ultrafast Nanoscopy (RUN) at the University of Regensburg invites applications for 10 PhD positions within the Research Training Group RTG 2905, "Ultrafast nanoscopy - from single particle dynamics to cooperative processes." This multidisciplinary program aims to advance the frontiers of quantum-, nano-, and bio-technologies by developing and applying innovative nanoscopy concepts to unravel microscopic dynamics in custom-tailored materials. The research focuses on capturing ultrafast videos of the nanoworld, enabling a deeper understanding of quantum materials and biochemical reactions as they unfold in real time.
As a doctoral researcher, you will join a vibrant team of distinguished scientists from physics, biology, experiment, and theory. You will have the opportunity to pioneer novel nanovideography techniques, resolve atomic-scale quantum dynamics, and trace cooperative processes in increasingly complex systems. Projects may involve developing quantum theories for nanoscopy, advancing new imaging modalities such as lightwave scanning tunnelling microscopy, time-resolved momentum microscopy, near-field nanoscopy, fluorescence-based super-resolution microscopy, ultrafast atomic force microscopy, and time-resolved cryo-electron microscopy. These approaches will be used to study ultrafast dynamics in nanoscale systems, including electronic wave-packet motion in single molecules, molecular solids, nanomaterials, collective excitations, energy transfer in DNA origami structures, and atomic forces.
The program offers a structured doctoral training environment, including continuous scientific mentoring by two advisors from complementary research areas, extensive in-person training courses, and networking opportunities. You will present your work at international conferences and project meetings, strengthening your scientific communication and collaboration skills. A funded three-month research stay abroad at a leading institution is included, providing valuable experience in a different research environment. Targeted services for international employees are available through the International Office.
Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in physics, biology, chemistry, or a related field, with above-average academic performance. Prior experience in relevant microscopy concepts, ultrafast physics, or biology is highly desirable, demonstrated through a thesis or peer-reviewed publications. Proficiency in English and programming skills (e.g., Python) are desirable. The position is for a fixed term of 3.5 years, with pay in line with 75% of pay group 13 of the Collective Agreement for the Public Service (TV-L E13).
