About this position
PHAETHON Centre of Excellence is offering five PhD positions (R1) in Sociotechnical Embedding of Energy Technologies at the University of Cyprus in Nicosia, Cyprus. The positions sit within the Energy Geopolitics and Governance, Socioeconomics and Environmental Sustainability Research Unit and are aimed at highly motivated early-stage researchers interested in how energy technologies are embedded in society.
The project focuses on energy communities and related themes such as citizen perceptions of energy policy, technology and practices, stakeholder engagement modelling, and energy behaviour and flexibility. The programme is especially relevant to applicants with backgrounds in environmental social science, sociology, or closely related humanities fields. The research will involve data collection and analysis, publication in international journals, conference presentations, and collaboration in an international, interdisciplinary environment.
Applicants may follow one of several doctoral pathways: a PhD at the University of Cyprus, a jointly supervised PhD between the University of Cyprus and either the University of Groningen or the Technical University of Denmark, or a joint PhD between the University of Cyprus and the University of Groningen. In all cases, candidates are registered as full-time PhD students at the University of Cyprus, with the main workplace located there.
This is a fully funded doctoral opportunity. Support includes a gross annual rate of €18,000–€30,000 (including the 13th salary), tuition coverage for up to four years, research support, access to laboratory infrastructure, mobility funding, and support for conferences and scientific training. Residency in Cyprus is required.
Eligibility requires a (Research) Master’s degree in environmental social science, humanities, or a related area demonstrating interest and aptitude for the topic. Applicants should have a strong academic record, analytical and research skills, excellent English, and a willingness to produce high-quality international publications and a PhD dissertation.
The application deadline is 6 November 2026. Candidates must apply via the PHAETHON vacancies portal and also submit a separate application to the relevant University of Cyprus PhD programme through the Graduate School. Formal admission to the University of Cyprus is mandatory before the studentship can be activated.
