The PhD programme in Geography at the University of Göttingen is designed for students interested in the research focus of 'Resources and Sustainability.' The programme explores the interface of human-environment research, emphasizing process mapping and modelling, material balances (including water, air, sediment, carbon, nitrogen, and pollutants), reconstruction of past environmental conditions, and analysis and modelling of interventions in biogeochemical cycles. Social science methodologies are integrated, covering human ecology, political ecology, institutional analysis, and resource-use conflicts.

The Departments of Human Geography, Physical Geography, and Cartography, GIS and Remote Sensing are closely linked with the Centre for Biodiversity and Sustainable Land Use (CBL). The Department of Human Geography collaborates with the Centre for Modern Indian Studies (CeMIS), while Cartography, GIS and Remote Sensing is part of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Sustainable Development (IZNE). Doctoral students participate in international collaborative projects and centres, gaining skills beyond the curricular programme through active involvement in academic affairs of the Faculty and Institute of Geography.

The programme is structured around individual research, with 160 ECTS earned through dissertation and defence. Students also complete 20 ECTS through courses, including one compulsory course on theory and methods and three elective courses (such as reflecting research, scientific communication, scientific teaching, and key competencies). Students have flexibility in choosing their courses each semester. The programme duration is six semesters, and courses are held in English (75%) and German (25%).

There are no tuition fees, but a semester contribution of around 400 EUR covers regional transport and other student services. The average cost of living in Göttingen is about 850 EUR per month, including accommodation, food, health insurance, and books. The university offers discounts for cultural events and reduced prices at university canteens. Funding opportunities within the university are not available, so students must secure their own funding.

Applicants must have a Master's degree and at least 150 ECTS credits in geography, environmental sciences, agricultural sciences, forest sciences, biology, or social or economic sciences. Proof of English language proficiency is required (see requirements for accepted certificates and scores). Confirmation from a potential supervisor at the Institute of Geography is necessary for application. The application deadlines are 31 July for the winter semester and 31 January for the summer semester.
