About this position
PhD Research Associate opportunity in African political ecologies and data science at the University of Bayreuth, within the Cluster of Excellence EXC 2052 Africa Multiple.
The project is part of the research section “Ecologies” and the interdisciplinary project “Extinctions: Reconfiguring Knowledge and Discourses of Biodiversity and Species Loss in Africa.” The PhD will combine quantitative ecological analyses with critical social-science perspectives on knowledge production, biodiversity, and species extinction.
The successful candidate will compile, synthesize, and analyze biodiversity data from across Africa to reconstruct patterns of biodiversity change and species extinction, while also examining how biodiversity knowledge is produced and where key knowledge gaps remain. The position is based at the University of Bayreuth and involves close collaboration with partner institutions in Kenya and South Africa.
Applicants should have a completed master’s degree in ecology, environmental sciences, conservation, data science, or anthropology/science and technology studies, plus experience in data/computer science. Strong quantitative and statistical modelling skills are required, together with very good English. Interdisciplinary experience, qualitative methods, African Studies, and post-/de-/anticolonial debates are desirable.
Funding includes a 75% TV-L E13 PhD position for four years, a dedicated research budget, and support for more than four months of fieldwork in Kenya and South Africa. The role also offers international networking, conference participation, research stays across Africa and Europe, and membership in BIGSAS.
Deadline: 7 September 2026. Apply online via the University of Bayreuth portal and quote the keyword “extinctions”. Required documents include a cover letter, CV, transcripts, degree certificates, and a writing sample.
