About this position

PhD Research Fellow opportunity in climate dynamics at the Geophysical Institute, University of Bergen, Norway. The project is part of NorCPMNext, a strategic collaboration with the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research and partners including NERSC and NORCE.

The research focuses on AI-based downscaling of coarse-resolution climate model output to produce high-resolution, actionable climate information for regional and local scales. The project sits at the intersection of Earth science, physics, computer science, mathematics, and environmental science, with emphasis on subseasonal-to-seasonal prediction, climate extremes, and hybrid physics-AI modelling.

The successful candidate will work on climate hazards such as heatwaves, heavy precipitation, and severe sea-ice conditions, and will apply the methods in stakeholder-oriented case studies assessing risks in Norway. The position is embedded in an international climate research environment with around 200 scientists from many countries.

Eligibility highlights: a master's degree (or equivalent) in atmospheric sciences, physics, applied mathematics, computer science, or a related field; required experience in atmospheric dynamics; scientific programming skills; strong English; and the ability to work independently and collaboratively. Master’s students may apply if they finish their final exam before 31 December 2026, but the degree must be completed before starting.

Funding: fixed-term PhD fellowship for 3 years, with a possible 4th year for teaching/career development. Salary is NOK 593,700 gross annually, plus pension and welfare benefits.

Deadline: 15 October 2026. Apply via Jobbnorge with CV, transcripts/diplomas, motivation and qualification statements, referee contacts, English documentation if required, and publication list.
