About this position

Call for applications for a PhD Research Fellow in Education and Psychology at the University of Oslo, within CREATE – Centre for Research on Equality in Education. The project focuses on equality in education and reducing inequalities through evidence-based interventions.

The PhD is linked to a research strand on intervening on barriers to equality and will involve designing and evaluating educational interventions, studying causal mechanisms behind learning inequalities, and working with randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The research environment is interdisciplinary and connects education, psychology, sociology, economics, and quantitative methods such as statistics, econometrics, and psychometrics.

Research areas mentioned in the post include literacy (reading and writing), mathematics, and language development. Two intervention tracks are highlighted: a classroom-based writing intervention focused on argumentation skills, critical thinking, writing structure, and revision; and a mathematics intervention focused on basic arithmetic, fraction understanding, and support for struggling learners.

Eligibility requires a master’s degree in Education, Psychology, Special Needs Education, Cognitive Science, or a related field, with at least grade B on the master’s degree and thesis. Applicants should have strong quantitative skills and be fluent in English plus Norwegian or another Scandinavian language. Preferred experience includes assessing literacy/language skills, assessing mathematical skills, and working with children or schools.

The position is a paid PhD employment with a salary of NOK 550,800–594,000 per year and a duration of 3–4 years, with optional teaching duties. Applicants must submit a 1-page motivation letter, a 5–7 page project proposal, CV, academic transcripts, master’s thesis, publications if any, and 2–3 referees.

Deadline: 8 June 2026.
