The University of Bergen, Faculty of Law, invites applications for a PhD Research Fellow position focused on patient control of health data used for research and treatment purposes, as part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network ENDOTRAIN. This interdisciplinary project is embedded in Work Package 4: Legal and ethical aspects of AI tools, and aims to analyze the compatibility of the European Health Data Space (EHDS) with existing and forthcoming digital regulations such as the GDPR. The research will clarify the scope of patient control over health data before and after EHDS adoption, propose amendments to EU/EEA legislation if necessary, and explore national adjustments. The outcome will be a comprehensive legal analysis of frameworks affecting data-driven digital health approaches.

ENDOTRAIN is Europe’s first doctoral network in digital endocrinology, integrating AI, sensor technology, omics, and clinical medicine to transform diagnosis and treatment of adrenal diseases. The program trains interdisciplinary experts at the intersection of clinical endocrinology, AI, data science, engineering, ethics, and law. The PhD fellow will join a vibrant research environment at the Faculty of Law, affiliated with the Research Group for Information and Innovation Law, which focuses on legal issues related to technology, innovation, and information processing, including intellectual property and personal data.

The position is fully funded by the European Commission, offering a gross annual salary of NOK 568,700–610,400, with opportunities for mobility grants to institutions abroad, enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, and generous welfare benefits. The duration is three years, with a latest start date in August 2026. The structured PhD program includes mandatory and elective courses in legal theory, research methods, and dissemination, totaling 30 credits (one semester full-time).

Applicants must hold a master’s degree in law (or equivalent), with the thesis submitted before the deadline and the degree awarded prior to employment. Expertise in EU/EEA law is advantageous. Candidates should be motivated for interdisciplinary and international collaboration, able to work independently and as part of a team. English proficiency is required, and applicants with education from outside Scandinavia must provide certified translations and a Diploma Supplement. MSCA eligibility rules apply: candidates must not have resided or worked in Norway for more than 12 months in the past 36 months before the PhD start, must not already hold a doctoral degree, and must be eligible for doctoral studies.
