About this position
PhD Research Fellow in Power Quality Assessment and Planning of Distribution and Transmission Grids at the University of Agder (UiA), Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Engineering Sciences, Campus Grimstad, Norway.
This 3-year PhD project is linked to the Energy Systems Group and the national research centre FME SOLAR, focusing on photovoltaic (PV) energy and inverter-based resources in modern power systems.
Research topics include power quality monitoring, operational planning of distribution and transmission grids, digital twins for LV/MV and HV grids, event-based power quality assessment, EMT simulations, grid control strategies, voltage management, reactive power compensation (SVC/STATCOM), energy storage, demand-side management, hybrid PV-wind systems, and hosting capacity improvement.
The work will be validated through scaled hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) laboratory experiments and collaboration within the FME SOLAR consortium.
Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy, or a related field; final-semester candidates may apply. Applicants should have scientific programming and data analysis experience, preferably in MATLAB and/or Python, and strong English skills. TOEFL or IELTS documentation is required for applicants not exempt from NOKUT requirements. Admission to UiA’s PhD programme in Engineering and Science, Renewable Energy, is a prerequisite.

What's required
Master’s degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy, or a related discipline; final-semester candidates may apply. Applicants should have experience with scientific programming and data analysis, preferably MATLAB and/or Python, and good written and spoken English. Applicants not exempt from NOKUT requirements must document English proficiency with TOEFL (minimum 600 PBT or 92 iBT) or IELTS (minimum 6.5). Admission to UiA’s PhD programme in Engineering and Science, specialisation in Engineering Sciences, scientific field Renewable Energy, is a prerequisite. Desired qualifications include power quality analysis, EMT simulations, event-based power system studies, voltage control, hosting capacity analysis, renewable energy grid integration, HIL/laboratory experiments, research experience, and knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language.
