About this position

The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP), through its Research and Development Unit RISE-Health, is recruiting one PhD Researcher equivalent to Assistant Researcher within the CARDIOMICS project (Monitorização da saúde cardiocerebrovascular por metabolómica / cardio-cerebrovascular health monitoring through metabolomics).

This is a research-focused position in Biomedical Sciences and is linked to the analysis of cardiovascular disease cohorts using metabolomics and lipidomics approaches. The successful candidate will contribute to the implementation of metabolomic analysis of biological samples, the development and supervision of multidimensional databases, and integrated statistical analysis of clinical and metabolomic data. The post also includes broader scientific duties such as research, knowledge transfer, science communication, teaching, and training activities.

The appointment is under an individual fixed-term employment contract of uncertain duration at FMUP in Porto, Portugal. The position is full-time, with the research staff regime generally based on exclusive dedication. The gross monthly base salary is €3,576.56, plus meal allowance, and the contract duration cannot exceed the end of the project or the maximum legal limit of six years.

Applicants must hold a PhD degree in Biomedical Sciences, Health Sciences, or a related area. The notice requires demonstrated experience in metabolomics and lipidomics research applied to human physiology, cardiovascular research, and R programming. Preferred experience includes advanced statistics and predictive modelling in R, database development and management, and the fusion of clinical and metabolomic data. Experience in supervision or co-supervision of master’s/doctoral-level students is also valued.

The selection process is based primarily on the assessment of scientific and curricular path (90%), with an interview used if the panel considers it necessary (10%). Evaluation places strong emphasis on publications and presentations in cardiovascular and/or metabolomics research, alongside project participation and knowledge-transfer activities. Foreign PhD degrees must be recognised by a Portuguese higher education institution by the recruitment date.

Applications must be submitted by 2 November 2026 at 23:59 (Europe/Lisbon) via the Apply UP platform using reference INVTERM-FMUP-26-11. Candidates must upload proof of the PhD degree, a detailed CV in Portuguese or English, a cover letter explaining motivation and relevant scientific activity, and supporting documents for eligibility and merit.
