About this position

This PhD project at the University of Strathclyde Business School, in partnership with Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) Transmission, investigates the social and economic value of major investments in electricity networks to support a fair and inclusive net zero transition. The research leverages macroeconomic models to provide robust, policy-relevant evidence on the economy-wide impacts of large-scale network investment.

The project aims to: (1) conduct detailed analysis of the electricity network supply chain, identifying capacity constraints and opportunities for optimisation to enhance domestic economic benefits; (2) improve the representation of electricity networks within Scotland’s Input–Output tables for more accurate economy-wide modelling; and (3) assess the distributional impacts of network investment using macroeconomic models such as Input–Output and Computable General Equilibrium.

Students will gain hands-on industrial experience, including access to SSEN facilities and time spent at their Glasgow offices, providing valuable insight into how academic research informs real-world investment decisions. The project is ideal for candidates interested in macroeconomics, microeconomics, socioeconomics, and the intersection of energy infrastructure and policy.

Funding is available for UK students, covering all university tuition fees and an annual tax-free stipend for three years. International students are eligible to apply but must secure funding for the difference between home and international tuition fees, with exceptional candidates potentially receiving additional support. Applicants should have a strong academic background in economics, business, or a related discipline, and possess quantitative skills relevant to macroeconomic modelling. English language requirements apply for international candidates.

The application deadline is April 30, 2026. For further details and to apply, visit the project page via the provided link.
