About this position

Aalborg University is advertising two research openings in the computational materials chemistry group led by Kasper Tolborg in the Department of Chemistry and Bioscience, Denmark: a Postdoc and a PhD Stipend / Integrated PhD Stipend.

The research theme is computational discovery of disordered crystalline materials for solid-state electrolytes and next-generation battery materials. The project sits within the Villum Young Investigator project “Entropy in materials design: Accelerated discovery of disordered solid electrolytes” and combines density functional theory, machine learning, scientific programming (e.g. Python), and in the PhD project also molecular dynamics and possible experimental validation. The postdoc will develop computational datasets and ML models for disordered materials, while the PhD project focuses on designing crystalline solid electrolytes with tailored disorder and may include experimental synthesis and characterization.

Postdoc eligibility: PhD in chemistry, materials science, physics, nanoscience, or a closely related field; strong publication record; experience with DFT and machine learning; programming skills; and strong English, teamwork, and interdisciplinary skills. Experience with disordered materials and automated workflows is an advantage.

PhD eligibility: master’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, physics, nanoscience, or a closely related field. Integrated PhD applicants must be enrolled in a relevant master’s programme and not yet have completed the degree. Strong materials chemistry, analytical skills, Python, English, and collaborative ability are required; ML, DFT, MD, solid-state synthesis, and materials characterization are advantageous.

Funding and terms: The postdoc is a two-year full-time position. The PhD stipend is normally 3 years; the integrated PhD includes SU-PhD grants for up to two years and then up to two years of PhD employment after the master’s degree. The post does not mention a specific stipend amount.

Deadline: 21 April 2026 for both positions. Applications must be submitted through Aalborg University’s recruitment system on the job advertisement page.

Contact: Kasper Tolborg ([email protected]). The post also mentions collaboration with Assoc. Prof. Alex Ganose at Imperial College London and a possible 1–2 month exchange stay for the postdoc.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
