About this position

PhD stipend at Aalborg University in intelligent industrial energy systems, with a research focus on physics-informed AI, digital twins, advanced control, thermal systems, machine learning, system modelling, and optimization.

The project is embedded in a collaborative research setting with industrial partners and uses realistic system configurations, experimental setups, and operational data. The goal is to develop methods that combine first-principles models with data-driven learning for adaptive, real-time operation of complex electrified industrial thermal systems. Example applications include drying processes, heat pumps, thermal storage, and other high-temperature, high-power process units.

You will work across modelling, reduced-order representations, online optimization, and control design. The position is especially relevant for candidates interested in energy engineering, mechanical engineering, control, applied mathematics, physics, and related fields. The post emphasizes curiosity, analytical thinking, and the ability to connect physical insight with data-driven methods.

This is a 3-year PhD stipend based at the Aalborg campus in Denmark. Funding includes salary and pension benefits; the base salary starts at 31,242.75 DKK before taxes plus 18.07% pension contribution, with possible negotiation based on qualifications and experience.

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree and will be enrolled in the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science. The PhD includes 30 ECTS of courses, teaching or dissemination experience, and an external research stay outside Aalborg University, preferably 3–6 months abroad.

How to apply: submit a CV, transcripts/diplomas, a short motivation, and other relevant documents through Aalborg University’s recruitment system. The position is open from 15 September 2026 or soon thereafter.
