About this position
Join a vibrant and interdisciplinary research group at Aalborg University, Department of Chemistry and Bioscience, for a PhD stipend or Integrated PhD stipend in Accelerated Materials Discovery. This opportunity is part of the Villum Young Investigator project, "Entropy in materials design: Accelerated discovery of disordered solid electrolytes," focusing on computational and experimental approaches to develop next-generation sustainable energy materials, particularly solid-state electrolytes for batteries.
The project aims to accelerate the discovery of new materials using computational chemistry, machine learning, and molecular dynamics simulations, with a strong emphasis on understanding and designing disorder in crystalline solids. The research will combine density functional theory calculations with machine learning to predict promising disordered materials, followed by experimental validation through solid state synthesis and materials characterization. The balance between computational and experimental work can be tailored to the candidate’s interests and expertise.
As a PhD student, you will join the computational materials chemistry group led by Tenure-Track Assistant Professor Kasper Tolborg, within the Section of Disordered Materials. The group offers state-of-the-art computational and experimental infrastructure, a dynamic work environment, and opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration. The department values diversity, openness, and inclusivity, and encourages applicants from all backgrounds.
Eligibility requires a master’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, physics, nanoscience, or a closely related field for the PhD stipend. For the integrated PhD stipend, candidates must be enrolled in a relevant master’s programme. Strong competence in materials chemistry, analytical skills, proficiency in scientific programming (e.g., Python), and excellent English communication are essential. Experience with machine learning, density functional theory, molecular dynamics, solid state synthesis, and materials characterization is advantageous. Collaborative skills and independence are expected.
The PhD stipend is typically for 3 years. The integrated PhD stipend includes SU-PhD Grants for up to 2 years during master’s enrollment, followed by 2 years as a PhD fellow under the Danish collective agreement. All PhD students must complete 30 ECTS of PhD courses, gain teaching or dissemination experience, and undertake an external research stay (preferably 3–6 months) outside Aalborg University.
Aalborg University is a leading research and educational institution with campuses in Aalborg, Esbjerg, and Copenhagen. The Department of Chemistry and Bioscience hosts approximately 150 employees, 75 PhD students, and 775 bachelor and master’s students, contributing to advances in biology, chemistry, biotechnology, bioengineering, environmental science, and chemical engineering.
To apply, submit your application via Aalborg University’s recruitment system, including a motivation statement, CV, diplomas or transcripts, and other relevant documents. The deadline for applications is 1 September 2026. For questions, contact Assistant Professor Kasper Tolborg or the AAU PhD office. The selection process includes shortlisting and assessment by qualified experts. Salary and terms are governed by the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations and the state (AC collective agreement).
