About this position
European XFEL GmbH is offering a PhD student position in theoretical and computational physics within its Theory Department in Schenefeld, Germany. The project focuses on developing and applying rotational-invariant methods for x-ray scattering and single-particle imaging at XFELs, with particular interest in biological and nanoengineered particles.
The doctoral researcher will work on advanced theoretical and computational approaches for extracting and analyzing angular cross-correlation functions and rotational invariants in x-ray scattering. The role also includes analyzing and interpreting experimental XFEL datasets, primarily from the European XFEL, participating in relevant beamtimes and collaborative projects with internal and external user groups, and contributing to the development of in-house software for invariant-based structural analysis.
This is a part-time temporary position (29.25 hours/week) limited to 3 years. The post is clearly structured as a PhD appointment and includes dissemination through scientific publications, conference presentations, and the final PhD thesis.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a master’s degree in physics or a related discipline, have a strong mathematics background, and ideally programming experience in Python or C/C++. Excellent English proficiency is required, together with strong communication skills and an interest in working collaboratively with experimentalists and theorists.
Funding and benefits: the position is paid under German public-service compensation, listed as PG 13/1 with 3,676.28€ for a 75% position, plus an annual special payment of 75–95% of one month’s salary.
