The Institute for Quantum Phenomena in Novel Materials at Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie GmbH is offering a PhD position focused on the investigation of quantum magnets. The research group conducts internationally leading studies in quantum and frustrated magnetism, multifunctional materials, and superconductivity, providing state-of-the-art facilities for materials synthesis, sample characterization, and advanced X-ray and neutron scattering experiments. As a PhD student, you will explore quantum materials with a particular emphasis on quantum and topological magnets. The research centers on exotic states and excitations, such as quantum spin ice and spin liquids, using a combination of physical property measurements and scattering techniques. Your tasks will include synthesizing magnetic materials, measuring their macroscopic physical properties (magnetization, heat capacity), and performing neutron and X-ray scattering experiments to probe structural, electronic, and magnetic properties. You will also develop an understanding of underlying magnetic processes through complex data analysis and computer simulations, working in close collaboration with theoretical physicists to test models and generate new insights.
Applicants should hold a Bachelor's degree in physics and a Master's degree or diploma in condensed matter physics, with good knowledge in magnetism. Ideally, candidates will have experience with neutron scattering and computer programming skills. The position offers attractive remuneration according to the collective agreement for the public sector (TVöD Bund), a company pension plan, relocation support for candidates from non-EU countries, and a subsidy for public transport.
