Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) is advertising a PhD Student in Aerosol Chemistry within the Laboratory of Atmospheric Chemistry. The project focuses on off-line aerosol organics characterization, source apportionment, and fossil / non-fossil carbon analyses using aerosol mass spectrometry and 14C analyses, with a regional emphasis on Eastern Europe and Asia.

The work includes performing 14C and aerosol mass spectrometer analyses on filters collected in Eastern Europe and Asia, developing new workflows for methanol extraction with the aerosol mass spectrometer, and studying the source apportionment of organics and elemental carbon across different regions. The position also involves offline measurements at PSI and the University of Bern, publication in high-impact journals, and writing a PhD thesis at ETH Zurich.

Eligibility highlights: a Master's degree in Atmospheric Science or a related field, laboratory experience (advantageous), strong programming and data analysis skills (e.g. Python), and excellent oral and written English. The post is suited to a team player with interest in atmospheric chemistry, aerosol science, and analytical methods.
