About this position

The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) is advertising a PhD Student in Aerosol Chemistry within the Laboratory of Atmospheric Chemistry in Switzerland. PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences in the country and offers an interdisciplinary research environment focused on future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation, and fundamental science.

The project centres on aerosol chemistry and atmospheric measurements, with work that includes ^14C analysis, aerosol mass spectrometer analyses of filter samples collected in eastern Europe and Asia, and development of new methanol extraction workflows. The doctoral researcher will also contribute to source apportionment of organics and elemental carbon across different regions, carry out offline measurements at PSI and the University of Bern, support other laboratory projects, publish in high-impact journals, and write a PhD thesis for ETH Zurich.

Applicants should hold a Master's degree in Atmospheric Science or a closely related field. Laboratory experience is beneficial, and the role requires strong programming and data analysis skills, very good written and spoken English, and a collaborative team-oriented approach. The position is suited to candidates interested in analytical and environmental chemistry, atmospheric aerosols, and computational data analysis.

The post is based at PSI in Villigen, Switzerland, with collaboration involving the University of Bern and ETH Zurich. The application deadline is 5 August 2026. Interested candidates should apply online using the provided application portal. For further information, contact Dr Kaspar Dällenbach or Prof. Dr Andre Prevot via email.
