About this position

The Research Center Borstel, Leibniz Lung Centre, is recruiting a PhD student (doctoral researcher) for the Leibniz ScienceCampus Antimicrobial Resistance Plasticity (AMR-PLAS). The project focuses on how microorganisms adapt under antibiotic treatment, with an emphasis on bacterial plasticity, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and clinically relevant pathogens including ESKAPE pathogens and mycobacteria.

The doctoral researcher will join a structured network of seven doctoral candidates across the Research Center Borstel and Kiel University, working closely with a junior researcher and benefiting from methodological support, scientific exchange, and interdisciplinary training. The research environment combines experimental, molecular biological, genomic, and theoretical approaches, with access to state-of-the-art infrastructure.

Research interests and skills highlighted in the call include microbiology, molecular biology, biomedicine, genomics, and bioinformatics. Applicants should have practical laboratory experience (for example PCR, cloning, cell culture, nucleic acid extraction) and a strong interest in next-generation sequencing analysis using Linux command line tools and scripts such as Python, R, and Bash. Experience with bioinformatic pipelines for read alignment, variant detection, assembly, or similar analyses is especially relevant.

The position is based at a renowned lung research center near Hamburg and is initially limited to 3 years. Compensation follows TVöD-VKA with standard public-sector benefits. The post is intended for candidates with a completed Master's degree or equivalent in microbiology, molecular biology, biomedicine, genomics, or a related field, plus excellent English skills and the ability to present results and contribute to publications.
