About this position

PhD opportunity in computational biology / bioinformatics at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), within the DKTK partner site Munich and the Institute of Molecular Oncology and Functional Genomics. The project focuses on the molecular basis of cancer using integrated analyses of genomics, transcriptomics, functional genomics, and multi-dimensional biological data. Research themes include genomic and screening technology development, computational large-scale data integration, cell fate transitions in development and cancer, molecular mechanisms of cancer evolution, and non-coding RNA biology.

The successful candidate will work closely with experimental and computational researchers in a multidisciplinary environment spanning cancer biology, molecular genetics, bioinformatics, and clinical collaboration. The position is 100% on-site and is initially limited to 3 years.

Eligibility highlights: MSc in bioinformatics, computational biology, or a related field; or a life science degree with substantial computational biology training and programming experience. Applicants should have hands-on experience from a thesis, internship, or research project, plus Linux/Unix, Bash, R and/or Python, applied statistics, and bioinformatics methods for transcriptomic/genomic data. Experience with bulk RNA-seq, single-cell RNA-seq, DNA sequencing, multi-omics integration, and machine learning/deep learning is an advantage. Fluency in English is required.

Funding: doctoral salary with usual social benefits, plus 30 days of vacation, flexible working hours, part-time possibility, family-friendly environment, subsidized Germany job ticket, mentoring, and access to international research networks.

Application: apply online via the provided website link. E-mail applications are not accepted. Deadline: 8 October 2026.
