About this position
The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Villigen, Switzerland, is advertising a PhD Student in Condensed Matter Physics position at the PEARL beamline of the Swiss Light Source.
This doctoral project focuses on the atomic and electronic structure of altermagnetic materials, combining experimental techniques such as photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS, ARPES) and scanning probe microscopy (STM, AFM). The work is strongly experimental, with activity at PSI and other synchrotron light sources, and includes maintaining and developing instrumentation and data analysis tools in collaboration with the team.
The successful candidate will collaborate with both experimental and theoretical partners, support external users performing experiments at the Pearl beamline, and disseminate results through conferences and journal articles. The role also includes pursuing a doctoral degree in physics and participating in teaching activities at the University of Zurich.
Eligibility highlights: a master’s degree in physics or a related field, practical experience with scanning probe and/or photoelectron methods, programming skills for data analysis (for example Python), and excellent English communication skills. The position is full-time and temporary.
Application deadline: 15 September 2026 (23:59 Europe/Zurich). Apply online through the PSI application portal and include referee addresses with your submission. For further information, contact Dr Matthias Muntwiler.
PSI is a major Swiss research institute for natural and engineering sciences with a strong training culture and a dynamic interdisciplinary environment.
