About this position
The Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) invites applications for a PhD student position in Large Language Models, Innovation, and Science. Located in Brussels, Belgium, VUB is renowned for its commitment to freedom, equality, and solidarity, fostering a diverse and innovative academic environment. As a member of the EUTOPIA alliance, VUB is at the forefront of pioneering research and education in Europe.
This position is based in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Solvay Business School, within the Department of Business Technology and Operations and the Data Analytics Lab. The research focus is on the interaction between large language models, automated science, and innovation. Candidates will explore how large language models serve as both tools and objects of study, investigating topics such as differences in scientific methodology between models and humans, measuring model capabilities in economically and scientifically relevant tasks, and detecting model behaviors like cheating.
In addition to research, the PhD student will participate in departmental teaching, specifically guiding exercise sessions for Business Informatics and Business Information Systems. The role also includes contributing to the daily operations of the department, with the Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering Campus (Elsene) as the home base.
Applicants must have a master's degree in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Commercial Engineering, or (Applied) Economics. Excellent proficiency in Dutch and English is required, and experience with Python programming is advantageous. Candidates should not have worked as an assistant paid from operating resources for more than 12 months. Non-EEA nationals must meet VUB's permit and residence requirements. VUB values diversity and encourages applications from all backgrounds.
The offer includes a full-time PhD scholarship for 12 months, extendable up to 48 months based on positive evaluation. The grant is linked to government scales, and the position comes with extensive benefits: telework allowance, cost-free hospitalisation insurance, full reimbursement of public transport commute, affordable campus meals, sports and exercise facilities, discounts via Benefits@Work, nursery near campus, and access to training courses. Exceptional holiday arrangements and a supportive work-life balance are also provided.
The application deadline is 31 July 2026. To apply, submit your CV, motivation letter, and diploma (not required for VUB alumni) via the online portal. The selection process includes an initial review of application files and a job interview. For questions about the job content, contact Dr. Andres Algaba at [email protected].
