About this position
This PhD position at the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, Polish Academy of Sciences, offers an exciting opportunity to join the Poznań Doctoral School and contribute to cutting-edge research in the field of modified nucleotide residues for enhanced aptamer-protein interaction. The project, led by Dr. Weronika Kotkowiak, focuses on the development and characterization of DNA and RNA aptamers—short, single-stranded molecules that fold into complex 3D shapes and bind target proteins with high specificity. The research aims to overcome the natural limitations of aptamers by introducing novel chemical modifications, such as SUNAs (Slow Off-Rate Unlocked Nucleic Acids), sulfur substitutions, and modified sugar moieties, to improve their affinity and stability for therapeutic applications.
PhD students will work within the project 'Modified nucleotide residues as potential tool to increase aptamer - target protein interaction' (2024/55/D/NZ7/02686), funded by the National Science Center. The research involves planning and conducting experiments, analyzing and documenting results, and utilizing techniques such as UV/VIS spectroscopy, circular dichroism spectroscopy, coagulometry, vertical polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy. Students will also prepare presentations, reports, and scientific publications, and participate in seminars and conferences.
Funding includes a stipend of approximately 4300 PLN gross per month for 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to 48 months and an increase to 5500.50 PLN gross after mid-term evaluation. Social insurance, Multisport card, group insurance, and social benefits such as subsidized vacation leave and reimbursement for cultural event tickets are provided.
Eligibility requires an MSc degree in biology, chemistry, or a related field, or fulfillment of legal conditions for doctoral studies in Poland. Candidates should have laboratory experience in biology and biochemistry, preferably with oligonucleotides and spectroscopic techniques. Strong independent research skills, literature review abilities, effective communication, organizational skills, enthusiasm for experimental work, teamwork, and proficiency in English are essential. Documented scientific activities and reference letters are advantageous.
Applicants must submit an application form (with consent for personal data processing), certified diploma, scientific CV, cover letter, certificates of English proficiency (if available), and contact details of at least one previous scientific supervisor. Applications should be submitted via the eRecruiter portal by 31 August 2026. The recruitment process is detailed in the Regulations of Recruitment for PDS IPAS, and results will be announced on the PDS IPAS website. For further information, contact Dr. Weronika Kotkowiak at [email protected].
This position is ideal for candidates interested in molecular biology, biochemistry, aptamer technology, and therapeutic innovation. The Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry provides a collaborative and supportive environment for doctoral research, with access to advanced facilities and a vibrant scientific community in Poznan, Poland.
