About this position

PhD opportunity in organometallic catalysis at the Max Planck Institute for Coal Research in collaboration with Ruhr University Bochum and the RESOLV Cluster of Excellence.

The Early Career research group Catalysis led by Dr. Hanna Hinrika Cramer develops organometallic catalysts based on earth-abundant first-row transition metals. The project combines synthesis and characterization of organometallic complexes, catalytic applications, and quantum chemical calculations on electronic structures and reaction mechanisms. Current work focuses on well-defined chromium precatalysts for olefin upgrading and activation of strong bonds.

This is a PhD Student (m/f/d) opening, full-time, funded for three years, and located at Ruhr University Bochum (Germany). Students will participate in the integrated Graduate School Solvation Science (iGSS), with opportunities for a three-month international research stay, industrial internship, or entrepreneurship training.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree in chemistry or a related field, plus basic knowledge or research experience in molecular inorganic chemistry, coordination chemistry, catalysis, and/or reaction mechanisms. Strong English communication skills and motivation for sustainable chemistry are required.

Apply by 2026-10-23 by emailing a motivation letter, CV, and transcript of records to [email protected]. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and the earliest start date is 2027-01-01.
