About this position

The Research in Orthopedic Computer Science (ROCS) group at the University of Zurich is offering a PhD position in Robotic AI Imaging and Surgical Guidance. This project aims to revolutionize mobile fluoroscopy by developing an intelligent robotic platform for intraoperative navigation, leveraging AI-driven reconstruction pipelines. The research will focus on three main areas: robotic imaging (including end-effector design, calibration, and motion planning), 3D reconstruction (multi-view geometry, pose estimation, and AI-based reconstruction), and surgical guidance (real-time, context-aware feedback and visualization).

The successful candidate will work at the intersection of robotics, computer vision, and medical imaging, with strong clinical translation in collaboration with Balgrist University Hospital and the national research platform OR-X. The ROCS group is embedded in Zurich’s dynamic MedTech and AI ecosystem, providing access to state-of-the-art infrastructure for translational validation. The position offers a competitive PhD salary according to SNF guidelines, a flexible and supportive working environment, hybrid work options, and opportunities for international conference participation and teaching experience.

Applicants should have an excellent MSc in robotics, electrical engineering, or computer science, with strong skills in robotic control, computer vision, image processing, and programming. Experience with hardware (robotic arms, cameras, tracking systems), software frameworks (ROS/ROS2, OpenCV, ITK/VTK, AI/ML libraries), and medical image analysis is required. The anticipated start date is late 2025 or early 2026, with flexibility.

The University of Zurich offers a vibrant academic environment, excellent research infrastructure, and a range of benefits including work-life balance, childcare, continuing education, and healthcare. To apply, submit a motivation letter and academic CV as a single PDF. For more information, visit the application links or contact the ROCS group.
