About this position
The Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) in Barcelona is recruiting a PhD student for the Quasi-Living Materials Research Group. The project, titled “Design of super predatory vesicles”, is part of the ERC Consolidator Grant PhagoSynCell and sits at the intersection of polymer chemistry, supramolecular materials, and soft matter.
The scientific goal is to develop synthetic vesicles that can capture, engulf, and kill bacteria as a new antimicrobial strategy against antibiotic-resistant pathogens. The vesicles are based on supramolecular amphiphilic comb polymers (iCPs) that self-assemble in water into vesicles, or combisomes. The PhD will focus on designing and synthesizing novel iCPs, then studying how molecular architecture controls self-assembly, membrane properties, stability in biological media, and pathogen engulfment.
Day-to-day work will include designing and preparing libraries of comb polymers using organic synthesis and controlled radical polymerization, supported by molecular and self-assembly simulations. The role also involves combining microscopy, microfluidics, and physicochemical/biophysical techniques to probe vesicle properties and to establish structure–function relationships. The student will help identify molecular features that improve stability in biological media and engineer membranes for efficient engulfment of pathogens.
This is an ideal opportunity for an ambitious, independent researcher with a strong background in polymer chemistry or organic chemistry with a substantial polymer component. Hands-on experience in polymer and/or organic synthesis is essential, along with familiarity with macromolecular characterization methods such as NMR, FT-IR, UV-Vis, SEC, DSC, TGA, and TEM. Experience with supramolecular self-assembly, Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy, cryo-TEM, AFM, and related soft-matter or biophysical methods would be an advantage.
The position is a full-time, 3-year PhD contract, with a starting date of 2026-12-01. IBEC offers an interdisciplinary international research environment, training opportunities, mobility grants, mentoring for predoctoral and postdoctoral researchers, and support for relocation and visa/work permit procedures for international candidates. The deadline to apply is 2026-10-30.
Applications must be submitted through the IBEC careers portal. A cover letter tailored to the position and the contact details of two references are required.
