About this position
PhD Student Position at the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH), Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Heraklion, Greece
The research group of Professor Panagiotis Moschou is recruiting one motivated PhD student for an ERC-funded project under Horizon Europe: “Limited proteolysis mechanisms in plants for selective protein translation to improve heat tolerance.” The project explores novel protein-RNA interaction rules, RNA/protein assemblies, and the concept of “coregulons” in condensates, with an emphasis on how these mechanisms support environmental adaptation, development, and plant heat tolerance.
The lab uses interdisciplinary approaches including genetics, molecular methods, genomics, advanced imaging, and related molecular and genetic skills to investigate fundamental cellular mechanisms. The PhD researcher will collaborate with other members of the group on work packages within the ERC project.
Ideal candidates should have a background in molecular biology and/or informatics, strong English skills, and interest in plant-related biological research. Experience with genetic data, programming, cell biology, and plant work is desirable. The position includes training opportunities, journal clubs, conference participation, presentations, and research visits abroad to support scientific and professional development.
The appointment is based at IMBB-FORTH in Heraklion, Crete, Greece. The position is full-time and temporary, with a 12-month contract and the possibility of extension according to project needs. Funding is provided through the EU Horizon Europe ERC framework, and the budget/remuneration follows national legislation and candidate qualifications.
Applicants must hold relevant BSc and MSc degrees in biology, life sciences, chemistry, or related topics, and must be enrolled in a postgraduate program leading to a doctoral degree at a Greek university. The application deadline is 8 August 2026 at 23:59 (Europe/Athens). Applications should be submitted by email and include the application form, CV, statement of purpose, referee contacts, proof of qualifications, academic titles, and proof of doctoral enrollment.
This is a strong opportunity for students interested in plant molecular biology, RNA/protein biology, genomics, and heat stress adaptation in a leading research institute with ERC-level funding.
Funding details
Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
How to apply
Please submit your application including a cover letter, CV, academic transcripts, and contact information for two references. Applications should be sent via the online portal before the deadline.
