About this position
Karolinska Institutet is advertising a doctoral (PhD) student position in Public Health with a focus on de-implementation of low-value care. The position is based in the Department of Global Public Health and the PROCOME research group, which works on implementation science, healthcare improvement, and the effects of innovative improvement initiatives in public health, healthcare, and social care.
The project aims to generate new knowledge on how low-value care can be identified, understood, and reduced. Low-value care includes examinations, treatments, or other healthcare interventions that provide little or no benefit relative to their risks, costs, or alternatives. The doctoral student will contribute to four sub-studies: a scoping review of de-implementation research, interviews on patients’ perspectives, a survey experiment on factors influencing requests for low-value care, and adaptation/evaluation of methods linking barriers to de-implementation with strategies.
This PhD opportunity is strongly research-oriented and combines qualitative and quantitative methods, including literature reviews, interviews, survey experiments, framework analysis, and statistical analyses. The role also involves scientific writing, conference presentations, stakeholder coordination, and active participation in seminars and collaborative research activities.
Eligibility highlights: a master’s degree in Public Health, Implementation Science, or another relevant field; documented experience with quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis; strong systematic review skills; experience with SAS, STATA, and R; strong interest in implementation science and de-implementation; documented practical or theoretical experience in low-value care; very good Swedish; and fluent academic English.
Funding and terms: the successful candidate will be employed on a doctoral studentship for up to 4 years full-time with a contractual monthly salary. The workplace is in Solna, Sweden. KI notes that doctoral students are paid according to a salary scale.
How to apply: submit your application through the Varbi recruitment system. Include a personal letter, CV, degree projects and publications if any, other documents showing relevant skills and personal qualities, and documents proving general and specific eligibility. Applications may be written in English or Swedish.
Deadline: 30 October 2026.
