About this position
PhD studentship at the University of Nottingham on combined axial-radial flux electric machines for extreme power density applications, with a strong focus on electrical engineering, electric machines, electromagnetic design, multi-physics optimisation, and aerospace/defence propulsion.
The project is carried out in partnership with Ricardo UK and will investigate next-generation machine topologies, three-dimensional magnetic circuits, advanced magnetic materials, innovative winding configurations, and prototype-oriented design methodologies for future electrified propulsion systems.
The successful candidate will join the Power Electronics, Machines and Control (PEMC) Research Institute at Nottingham and work closely with Ricardo's PEMD team, benefiting from world-leading facilities and access to the UK's Electrification of Aerospace Propulsion facilities.
Funding: home tuition fees plus an annual tax-free stipend at the current UKRI rate. The studentship is primarily intended for home applicants; outstanding international candidates may be considered in exceptional circumstances.
Eligibility: First Class or high Upper Second-Class degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline. Helpful experience includes electrical machines/electric drives, electromagnetic finite element analysis, MATLAB or Python, and interest in electrified propulsion. Experience in electromagnetic design, thermal analysis, optimisation, or machine testing is advantageous.
