About this position
PhD Studentship at the University of Nottingham in Cover Crop Nutrient Dynamics, Sugar Beet Nutrition, Soil Health, and Climate Resilience.
This applied, industry-facing PhD sits in Agricultural & Environmental Sciences and focuses on how cover crops influence nutrient cycling and subsequent sugar beet performance under UK conditions. The project combines agronomy, soil science, microbial ecology, and crop modelling to quantify N, P, and K release from cereals, brassicas, legumes, and mixtures; establish multi-year field trials; and analyse soil microbial communities using PLFA and 16S/ITS sequencing.
The research aims to produce practical outputs for growers, including a fertiliser credit calculator and species selection guide, while improving understanding of soil health, pest/disease incidence, and climate resilience in sugar beet rotations. The project is funded jointly by BBRO, the Morley Agricultural Foundation, and the Lugden Hill Trust.
Supervision: Dr Hannah Cooper (University of Nottingham), Dr Nicholas Girkin (University of Nottingham), and Dr Georgina Barratt (BBRO).
Eligibility: UK citizens only. Applicants should hold at least a 2:1 in environmental science, agriculture, plant science, or a related discipline. Modelling experience is desirable but not required.
Funding: Tuition fees plus a tax-free stipend at current BBSRC rates for 48 months.
Deadline: 07 September 2026.
How to apply: Send a one-page cover letter and CV by email to [email protected].
