About this position

Trinity College Dublin is offering a fully funded PhD studentship in dynamic socio-marine ecosystem modelling within the Climate and Ocean / School of Engineering. The project focuses on marine and coastal socio-ecosystems such as Dublin Bay, with an emphasis on how climate change, bentho-pelagic coupling, nutrient cycling, carbon transfer, trophic connectivity, and human pressures reshape ecosystem structure over time and space.

The PhD will explore new mathematical and computational modelling approaches for systems that may reorganise, adapt, or emerge differently under climate change. Methods mentioned include stochastic processes, four-dimensional (space-time) modelling, complex systems, agent-based modelling, and artificial intelligence. The project is explicitly interested in scientifically useful combinations of these approaches rather than using AI for its own sake.

Supervision is by Prof. Karen Wiltshire, with co-supervision from Dr. Erica Terese Krueger, Dr. Michael Mitchell, and Dr. Sabine Horn (Alfred Wegener Institute).

Eligibility: applicants should have a BSc (2.1 honours) or MSc, or equivalent, in mathematics of complex systems, modelling, environmental/marine science, oceanography, computer science, or a closely related field.

Funding: the studentship runs for up to four years and includes full EU tuition fees (and partial non-EU fees) plus a tax-free stipend of €25,000 per annum, subject to satisfactory progress.

Location: Dublin, Ireland. Closing date: 1 November 2026 at 23:59 IST. Expected start date: 1 March 2027.
