About this position
PhD Studentship in Electronic Engineering at the University of Nottingham, within the Power Electronics and Machines Control Research Institute / Power Electronics and Machines Centre (PEMC) in the Faculty of Engineering.
This project focuses on power electronics, solid-state transformers (SSTs), multi-cellular converters, and control strategies for next-generation energy systems. Research applications include high-power EV charging, data centres, renewable energy integration, and energy storage systems.
The successful PhD student will study current SST topologies and control methods, then develop new control techniques for emerging energy demands and compact, reliable, economical power solutions. The work is supported by Siemens AG and involves collaboration with Dr Alan Watson, Dr Tabish Mir, Prof Pat Wheeler, and Dr Gopal Mondal.
Eligibility highlights include a first-class UK-equivalent degree in Electrical and/or Electronics Engineering. A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering (especially power electronics or electric drives), strong analytical and mathematical ability, and skills in MATLAB/Simulink or PLECS are desirable. The post offers home tuition fees, a UKRI stipend, and a £5,500/year industry top-up.
