About this position

PhD studentship at the University of East Anglia, School of Engineering, Mathematics and Physics, on developing a finite element based model for pellet relocation in nuclear reactor fuel.

The project focuses on pellet-clad interaction (PCI) in nuclear fuel performance, with emphasis on modelling fuel pellet fragments, inertial behaviour, chemical species migration, and loss-of-coolant accident scenarios. The work compares and benchmarks modelling approaches in Abaqus and COMSOL, including the mortar method in BISON, and validates results against experimental data and OECD PCMI benchmark exercises.

This is a 3.5-year fully funded PhD studentship supported by Amentum. Funding includes home-rate tuition fees, an annual tax-free stipend starting at £23,805 in 2026/27, and a research training support grant for equipment, travel, and conference attendance.

Minimum entry requirement: 2:1 in Engineering, Physics, or Materials Science. The successful candidate will work closely with Amentum staff and will need to obtain BPSS vetting during the PhD, with potential for CTC/SC clearance later.

Location: Norwich, United Kingdom. Deadline: 9 August 2026. Start date: 1 October 2026.
