About this position

PhD Studentship: Growing AI at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom.

This funded PhD project sits at the intersection of agriculture, computer science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, human-computer interaction, and human-centred decision support systems. The research aims to develop an AI-enabled, human-centred system that combines multimodal data, local practice, crop yield information, commodity prices, weather predictions, and other sensor/self-reported data to provide bespoke advice to farmers.

The project is supported by a collaborative agreement between Hutchinsons and LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming), giving the successful candidate access to experts and data from both organisations. The ultimate goal is to help farmers make informed decisions that improve both profitability and environmental sustainability.

Eligibility and requirements: applicants should have a strong background in engineering or computer science, with strong programming/software skills, awareness of machine learning theory and techniques, experience with large multimodal datasets, and an interest in HCI and human-centred system design. A good 2.1 degree in Engineering or Computer Science is required or expected by the start date. Prior farming knowledge is not essential, but would be an advantage. The studentship is available to eligible home students.

Funding: the position is funded and covers fees plus a stipend.

Deadline: 21 August 2026. Applications may close early if filled. There is also a £20 application fee for the Cambridge Postgraduate Application Portal.

How to apply: email a two-page CV and one-page covering letter to Per Ola Kristensson and John Dudley, using the subject line [CAM-GROWING-AI]. Candidates must also apply separately through the University of Cambridge postgraduate application portal if invited/shortlisted.
