About this position

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship at the University of Nottingham in the area of mechanical engineering and materials science.

The project investigates the interface material layer created during linear friction welding (LFW) of titanium alloys, with a focus on thermo-mechanical effects, material flow, process stability, and the interaction between the part and tooling. The research will combine computational simulation with experimental investigations, including test welds and novel material characterisation methods.

This is a CASE studentship linked to a long-standing engineering research relationship between the University of Nottingham and Rolls-Royce plc. The studentship will be hosted in Nottingham’s University Technology Centre in gas turbine transmissions systems, within a community of around 20 PhD students.

Funding is provided at £25,000 per annum for four years. The position is available from 1 October 2026. Due to funding restrictions, the opportunity is open only to UK or EU candidates.

Applicants should hold a first-class or upper second-class honours degree in mechanical engineering or a related subject. Informal enquiries can be made to Dr James Rouse at [email protected].

Apply through the University of Nottingham vacancy page using reference ENG413.
