This funded PhD project focuses on the multi-length-scale characterisation of critical materials for optimised extraction and recycling. The research sits at the intersection of chemical engineering, materials science, physics, mechanical engineering, and computer science, with a strong emphasis on advanced imaging and data-driven analysis.

The studentship is supervised by Dr Francesco Iacoviello and Dr Vassilis Charitopoulos at UCL. The work is based in London, United Kingdom, with access to UCL’s advanced imaging facilities and possible beamtime at national synchrotron and large-scale facilities.
Funding: Fully funded for 4 years, with a stipend of about £23,805 per year plus UK fees. Overseas applicants may apply if they can cover the difference between UK and overseas tuition fees.
Eligibility: Applicants should hold or expect to obtain a first-class MEng or MSc (or equivalent). Relevant backgrounds include Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Physics/Applied Physics, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, and related interdisciplinary STEM fields. Experience with tomography, electron microscopy, image analysis, programming, or mineral/battery systems is welcome but not required.
