About this position

This project sits at the intersection of computer science, mathematics, statistics, optimisation, game theory, and AI. It focuses on how protective security resources can be allocated across sites and locations in the UK and South Africa under uncertainty, using Stackelberg security games, reinforcement learning, simulation, and decision-support modelling.
The research will examine defender-attacker resource allocation, bounded rationality, probabilistic and adaptive adversary models, robustness, scalability, and how improved site-risk estimates can be integrated into allocation models. The work is intended to be explainable, empirically grounded, and relevant to protective security practice, including critical infrastructure and transport/event settings.
This is a cotutelle PhD between Coventry University (UK) and Stellenbosch University (South Africa). The successful candidate will be primarily based in Coventry and will also spend a significant period of study in South Africa.
Funding: tuition fees and bursary are included. Duration: full-time, fixed term, 3 to 3.5 years. Start date: January 2027. Deadline: 25 August 2026.
Eligibility highlights: relevant first degree and master's degree with merit-level marks, strong quantitative background, programming skills, and IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with 6.5 in each component. Experience with machine learning, optimisation, simulation, or protective security is desirable.
