About this position

This fully funded PhD studentship at the University of Strathclyde is offered through the EnerHy Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT), an EPSRC-funded programme focused on renewable energy and hydrogen research. The project, supported by Siemens Energy and EPSRC, targets the prediction of failures in high voltage direct current (HVDC) interconnections for offshore wind farms, a critical area for the reliability and resilience of future energy systems.

The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary research environment, working at the intersection of high voltage engineering, data science, and offshore energy systems. The research will involve developing predictive failure analysis methodologies for HVDC systems, including the assessment of key components such as switchgear and power transformers, as well as auxiliary systems vital to offshore platform operation and safety. The project will leverage advanced diagnostic models and complex condition monitoring data to create innovative solutions that enhance the long-term performance of next-generation HVDC networks.

The EnerHy CDT provides comprehensive training in wind and renewable energy, with the University of Strathclyde leading the research and training elements. The studentship is for four years full-time, covering all UK tuition fees and providing a tax-free stipend of £21,805 per annum. An additional £3,000 per year is available for consumables, travel, and research support, alongside a substantial Research Training Support Grant (RTSG) and further funding for outreach and development activities.

Applicants should possess a first-class or upper second-class degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Machine Learning, Physics, Data Analytics, or a related field. The programme welcomes motivated researchers eager to contribute to the advancement of offshore wind and HVDC technologies. Overseas/EU applications are accepted until 31 May 2026, while UK applications remain open until all places are filled. The third intake of the EnerHy programme commences in October 2026.
